Fashionable Lessons from Hollywood Part One

September 20 2010 at 05:47 AM

Evidence of bad taste in Hollywood is easy to come by.  Tartlets content to drink excessively in public rule the headlines, often edging out the quieter starlets that prefer charity or family time for their downtime activities.  Nowhere is this more apparent than headline grabbing girls that use their body for a tacky canvas.  Let’s discuss from a fashion standpoint who is getting it right, who is trying way to hard, who has potential and what we can take away from all of this.

Who’s Getting It Right
Jennifer Aniston Switch Premiere

While Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston may be different in every possible way, they do have one thing in common (besides Brad!).  Both women know what works on them and they seldom deviate.  You won’t see either in experimental fashions (Rhianna), outfits that make the news(Gaga) or even high couture (Swinton).  Both Jolie and Aniston stick to clothing that flatters their bodies, fits well, and is even a bit understated.  While both have been vilified in the press for being “boring” or “fashionable predictable” they have also been routinely praised for looking classy and beautiful.
Other “getting it right consistently” celebs include Marion Cottilard, Lea Michelle, Kate Winslet, and Scarlett Johansson.

Who’s Trying Way to Hard

Pre-makeover Kardashian was using every trick in the book to stay relevant and her biggest trick was her ultra curvy body.  Simply put, we saw way too much of it in various forms of undress.  While being bare will get you attention, it certainly does not make you seem like a credible celebrity.  Fortunately Kim figured this out, got herself a classy makeover, and jumped from the trying too hard category to the mostly-gets-it-right one.  Phoebe Price, however, continues to be one major hot mess.  Poor Phoebe is laughable.  It is impossible to take her seriously.  It is as though she actually tries to look as ridiculous as possible.  She often succeeds.  While this does garner her a fair share of attention, her photos are usually accompanied by scathing remarks.  When it comes to dressing sexy without dressing trashy, Phoebe should look to Uma Thurman for advice.

Other celebrities trying way too hard: The Olsen twins, Pamela Anderson, Pairs Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Bai Ling, and Heidi Montang.

Of course this blog is too short to list all the ladies that qualify for both categories, but you can certainly see a trend.  The women that dress for success get it right.  The women that dress to maintain press coverage should get a little more coverage – of the fabric kind.

Stay tuned for when we discuss the celebrity ladies teetering between both categories and what we can take away from investigating the closets of Hollywood’s hottest women.
