Gwak at VAWK

Our country to the North has many fine things they share with their American neighbors.  There is the delightful mixture of French fries, gravy and cheese curds that make up poutine, there is the vocal prowess that is Celine Dion, and there is the hard hitting and intense fashion line that is VAWK.

VAWK
Although VAWK launched in 2004, it was designer Sunny Fong’s 2009 appearance on Project Runway Canada that really brought him to the world’s attention.  Project Runway, Project Runway Canada and Project Catwalk brought out the usual mild to relatively talented people that were hungry for the attention that comes with getting in front of the camera.  Let’s face it, if the show was full of mild mannered designers happily working at their craft and saying please and thank you as they passed the scissors, well, it just wouldn’t make good TV.  Sunny, however, truly stood out on this show.  In the first place, his talent was miles above anything the audience or the judges had seen in previous episodes.  Fong’s designs hit the mark every single time.  Even when he didn’t win best of the week (although he did win most weeks) his designs were consistently well-made and cutting edge without diving into the “this is my art that nobody understands but me” territory.  Fong made clothes that everyone wanted to wear.

Fong also stood out from the competition because of his attitude.  Simply put, he didn’t have one.  He was friendly to everyone, minded his own business and kept out of the drama and backbiting that drives reality television.  Sunny Fong was on that show for one reason and that was to introduce VAWK to a bigger audience.  His success was great that moments after celebrity host Iman announced (to the surprise of nobody) that Fong was the undisputed winner of the season, she eagerly asked him, “so when will you design something for me?”  This, coming from a model who has had fabric cut on her body by internationally renowned designers, showed the impact Fong and VAWK had on the fashion industry.  He became an overnight sensation.
It is hard not to like the mild mannered, hard working Sunny Fong and it is impossible not to love VAWK.  The name so aptly sums up the clothing line.  VAWK is spelled in all caps because it demands respect.  It is strong, bold and confident.  It is stylish and luxurious. It knows what it is and it makes no apology for it.  It is the label other labels want to be.  It stands on its own and it owns its success.  VAWK is gawk-worthy, crave-worthy, and well on its way to becoming iconic.
Not bad for a Canadian label, eh?  Experience VAWK, and prepare to fall in instantly and hopelessly in love with this luxury brand.
