Hottest Looks for Summer 2009

As spring’s fresh, crisp air and budding new life gives way to the long, hot days of summer, the depression-chic trend gives way to a minimalistic, romantic style.  So, how does a fashionista rock the hottest trends of summer 2009?

First and foremost, lighten up – and I mean that literally and figuratively!  Monochrome is the new black; soft and flirty replaces strict and severe.  Nearly every designer, well known or newbie, sent models down the runway head to toe in soft yellow, grey, black, and even (*gasp*) beige.  Monochromatic can be problematic in that it tends to wash out the subject to the point of being bland and uninteresting.  Designers (and fashionistas) combat that problem by using floating, flirty fabrics cut to show off the figure in a relaxed and romantic way.  The lady-like looks of spring are still with us, but now it is more approachable and soft. A-line skirts become looser, nipped waists become hinted at rather than narrowly defined and cropped pants no longer hug the calves.  Do not, however, confuse fun and flirty with yards of wispy fabric floating in the breeze and surrounding you like a cloud as you walk.  Layers and details are kept to a minimum and there is no excess of material. A skirt is a skirt, not a multilayered, deconstructed, many paneled creation.  A blouse is a blouse, not a puffy sleeved, streamer flying, over the top marvel.  Outfits are accented by a hint of skin, a simple ruffle or a bit of sheer.

While the clothing has relaxed a little from spring, the hair gets a little more structured, although not by much.  To participate in the hottest hairstyles of summer, think smooth.  Smooth curls, smooth waves, smooth bobs.  Hair has a healthy shine and a cared for look.  Forget past fads when hair was pulled back half in and half out of elastic ponytail holders, frizzed out around the head, or bejeweled with large clips.  Sleek, unadorned hair is in, no matter what your cut or length.  Naturally you want to avoid mullets and head shaving, but you can wear a bob, a blunt cut, a side part, etc this summer as long as your hair is clean, neat, unadorned, smooth, and shiny.

As with spring’s footwear, you are still banned from wearing anything remotely clunky.  The delicately shod foot is still in with open toed shoes becoming a summer staple.  High heels are still a must – even for sandals.  Keep your rubber Crocs and Dawgs for gardening and wear ballet flats when you need something low and comfortable.  Shoes match, not contrast, with your outfit, in keeping with the monochromatic look.

Make up is also minimal for summer.  Gone are the red and matte lips of spring.  Lips are dewy but not shiny with a barely-there hint of coral.  Mascara in the same shade of your natural hair brings out the eyes and peachy blush gives you a glow.  The look is fresh, natural, and designed to look like you are wearing no makeup at all.

You want to avoid destroying your pared-down look with over accessorizing.  If you must wear a necklace (no broaches this season!) or bracelet, keep it simple and stick to one or the other.  Costume jewelry is still in although you won’t see many large stone pieces this summer.  This type of jewelry really stands out so make sure it does not overpower your look.
