How To Wear Over the Knee Boots

Do you know why I love fall? The boots! By the end of summer I am more than ready to shed my sandals, casual flip flops, and ballet flats for the sleek, sophisticated look of the boot. That is why I, like so many other boot enthusiasts, am jumping for joy with this season’s debut of the over-the-knee-boot. Unlike the mini skirt or military jacket, this is a rare trend, so get on board while you can! The question is, once you buy your tall boots, what do you wear them with? Well, fling open your closet and rethink your wardrobe ladies!
Shorts in winter? Yes you can! Now, I am not talking about Daisy Duke cut offs! If you have a nice pair of formal shorts, not denim, you can pair them with your boots. It it’s really cold out, add dark hose. Maria Sharapova has inked a deal with Cole Haan, and rocked this look for the publicity photos. While a couple celebrity blog’s dissed the look, the majority (myself included) hailed her as a fashionable knockout.
Tall boots as leggings? Yes you can! However, the taller the better for this look! If you have boots that not only go over the knee but all the way up the thigh, pair them dresses or skirts. Over the jeans? Yes you can! This is, in my opinion, the best way to wear tall boots – over a pair of snug jeans.
If misused, over the knee boots can go quickly from classy to trashy. To look tantalizing, not tarty, keep these principles in mind.
• When wearing with shorts, wear a long sleeved top or light sweater to balance the look. You are moving the shorts from casual summer to business/casual-formal wear so select an appropriate top. No tank tops or sloppy t-shirts.
• No super tight shorts. People should not look at you and start humming the theme from “Pretty Woman”!
• When wearing the boots as leggings, be honest about your body type and dress accordingly. A slinky, low cut, tight, cleavage baring red dress and black shiny boots that go all the way up are probably going to send the wrong message. However, a basic sheath or shirt dress would look very fashionable.
• The boots are the accessory. Don’t overload your look by adding too much jewelry or carrying competing bag. Keep the look streamlined and simple.
• When pairing with jeans, a heavy sweater or fitted blazer looks best.
• Select the right boots. If your legs are skinny, buy boots with a bit of slouch to add volume. If you wouldn’t last all day in heels, buy flats. If your legs are curvy, buy boots that hug the leg. Unless your style is Goth-chic, avoid the chunky heel/platform sole combination. Fashionable or not, your boots need to be wearable. Make sure you can pull them off and on with ease and they do not hurt your feet or legs.
No matter what you pair your boots with this season, the most important thing is to do it with confidence. This look is not for the shrinking violet. You will get noticed, admired, and stopped on the street as people point, stare and ask “where did you get those?!” So enjoy it! You’ve earned the attention so go ahead and strut!

I would really like to have a pair of these; not sure I could pull it off. Thanks for a fun site.

I can definitely see Maria Sharapova pulling off the boot look in the colder weather even in shorts. But then again you have to be very confident to pull it off. Great site by the way,
