Picture Perfect Eyebrows

Before we get started, I must disclaim.  This is not an article that will tell you how to create a pair of stunning brows on your own.  It will not tell you that waxing is painless. It will not subject you to holding a pencil to your face to find your natural arch.  It will, however, tell you how to get and maintain perfect brows.  If waxing scares you, consider threading or using a topical numbing agent. Let’s begin!

It is surprising how changing the shape of your eyebrows changes the look of your face.  If you don’t believe me, Google Leonard Nimory and compare pictures of his normal persona vs. Spock.  Often underrated, overlooked, un-plucked, and neglected, the humble brow is an important part of achieving the effortless beauty women crave.

So how does the average, non-celebrity woman achieve this facial hair divineness?  She goes to an esthetician.  Can you create two perfectly balanced brows that work with your facial proportions and have two symmetrical arches?  I guarantee an esthetician can do this better than you can.  You should be visiting a professional at least three times a year, and that’s just a minimum.  In between visits, you can easily maintain the look.  Your professional does not have to be “a stylist to the stars.”  My girl is not famous and only charges me $5 but she knows her stuff and she makes my brows look great.  What was that?  Did you say you don’t have time for such an appointment?  Guess again.  Most places are walk in; no appointment necessary.  Besides, it’s a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to pamper yourself in under five minutes.  Come on, you know you deserve it!

Having your brows done is akin to having your hair cut.  If your friend is sporting a lovely pair, ask her who did them.  Avoid salons that are not up on the trends (or you may walk out with high arches and look surprised for six weeks) and avoid any place that isn’t clean and friendly.

In between appointments, it is important to maintain the look.  Pluck every four to six weeks for normal growing hair.  Use sharp tweezers and pull in the direction your hair grows to remove the excess that grows above, below, or between your brows.  You should not let the arch your stylist created grow in completely before you start to maintain it.  If you can’t see his/her line, go get waxed again.  You should only need to remove a few hairs as brows of today are natural looking and not the thin, high line sported by 1930s starlets.

The waxing + plucking method is basically foolproof, but if you prefer another maintenance method, use wax.  With everything from cold to microwavable wax available on your drugstore shelves, you can find a formula that works for you.  Do not use liquid dissolving agents unless they are specifically designed for the eyebrows, and even then, I am not in favor of them. They can be difficult to apply leaving no room for error.  One slip of the Q-Tip and you’ve got a bald patch on your brow.  Even worse, if you drop any on your eyelashes or eyeball, you can do real damage.

I don’t know a woman alive that doesn’t want to wake up beautiful.  While some of us have to give what nature gave us a helping hand to achieve flawless skin, prominent cheekbones, and pouty lips, every woman can wake up daily with a pair of shapely brows.
